Hw 6-Food Diary

Breakfast:
Bacon egg and cheese= 420 calories
Orange juice= 112 calories
2Quakers chewy bars= 200 calories
I usually don't get enough time to eat breakfast in the morning but when I can i try my best to eat as much as i can. This is what i usually buy when i get breakfast in manhattan nut when i am at home the meals vary.

Lunch:
1 slice of pizza= 230 calories
1 large mountain dew soda= 431 calories
This meal i had for lunch did not fill me up because right after when class started i felt hungry again, since i felt so hungry i really could not pay attention in class and then i start to doze off. I feel that it is crucial to eat a good lunch if your a person that is not big on eating breakfast because if you don't through out the day you just feel drained.
Dinner:
Baked chicken= 212 calories
Macaroni and cheese= 197 calories
Broccoli= 42 calories
Desert Bread Pudding= 475 calories
This meal was one of the best meals i had this week because there was so much to eat, and the bread pudding made it even better. Usually after eating a meal like this i go right to sleep.

Lunch:
White castle- Three burgers, mozzarella sticks, french fries, and a medium drink=1,570 calories

This meal filled me up and i really like it a lot, white castle is something i don't eat often but when i can it is worth eating.

This whole week i just ate what i felt like eating and did not care about nutrition or the amount of calories. I bought what i could afford and what was most convenient at the time.

Hw 4 Dominant discourse

A dominate discourse is when people who have power and the majority discuss particular issues. the majority believes that the people that are put to lead and have power should be the ones with the most say and control in particular topics. when it comes to food the dominant discourse  are the dietitians, doctors, and large food corporations.
When it comes to discussing the dominant discourse in america the topic that seems most frequently discussed is what food is good for you and what food is bad for you and what the new generation should be eating. i also feel that the consumption of organic products has to be one of biggest topics discussed.  When food is being talked about the people who mostly get quoted are the people with power like doctors, dietitians etc. Ex. A man says that the reason why i am adding fruits and vegetables to my diet is because my doctors said i should) well on the other had if that mans friend was to say he would probably not have taken that seriously. The people in power have the most say in any situation, what they say can determine if you live another 4 years or die 4 years earlier.
In america people want to live long and enjoy life but we don't understand that eating healthy is the key to unlocking that door. Most Americans rather eat junk food all day than eat salad or a fruit so they can get their recommended amount of vitamins and nutrition for that day. while reading The articleTold To Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries I realized that tons of money is put into the school food industry to make sure children eat better but we still eat very poorly. An interesting quote I found was Both efforts, high and low, are aimed at the same thing: getting America to eat its vegetablesGood luck. Despite two decades of public health initiatives, stricter government dietary guidelines, record growth of farmers’ markets and the ease of products like salad in a bag, Americans still aren’t eating enough vegetables.(Told To Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries)  This quote proves that Americans just rather not eat healthy, and i believe that the main reason why is because we are so use to greasy, salty, and sweet food that eating a salad of having a banana is just absurd.

Hw 3 Family Foodways

When i was talking to my mother she explained how she goes about approaching food. She said that she mainly looks at food from a nutritional stand point the main reason why is because my mother is a school food manager and a dietician. She also pays a lot of attention to how appealing the food is and has a culinary point of view on what she eats and feeds her kids. she believes in making all different types of food from different cultures. since she loves to cook that also has to do with how she approaches food, because my mother went to school to be in the school food industry she knows whats good to eat and what is not good to eat.
My mothers parents did not see food from a nutritional stand point, they only made jamaican cuisine. they only made what they knew how to make and did not try to make anything new. their main focus was to make sure you were well feed and not hungry to make sure that you got breakfast, lunch and diner. The main goal was to make sure the food taste good.
The difference between generation food ways has to mainly do with the fact that my mother went to college to major in nutrition so she could become a dietician. My mother also is a vegetarian and only eats and drinks organic products. Back in Jamaica that was not the focus with my mothers parents, and since they were not in america were you are exposed to so many different cultures of food they were stuck with what they had. I believe the main difference is time and location. The reason I say time is because since my grandparents were born back in the day when eating healthy was the thing that everybody was doing they didn't know a lot about what food is good or bad. Location is also a big part because they were born and raised in jamaica where they mostly only eat jamaican food, so they are not use to trying new food that is beneficial to their health.

Hw 2- Mcdonalds and food market experience

While in mcdonalds I realize a couple of things that caught my attention. The first was once you walk in by the entrance and the cash register there are two ATM's. That automatically shows that they want you to spend money they are making it convenient for people to obtain money. The second thing I realize was the amount of calories per meal that was on the menu. In Mcdonalds you can either get the sandwich or the whole meal. As I check the calories for ever sandwich I notice that everything was over 600 calories. When you add the hash brown and orange juice the calories increase to 900-1000. The main reason why Mcdonalds gets such much characters is because you can get a bang for your buck. The meals are very cheap and easy to afford so it is understandable why so much people would come back and buy food there. While waiting on line to order something the two men in front of me were talking about how hungry they were, one of them said that he was so hungry that he was going to order to deluxe breakfast meals. When he said that I glanced at the menu and saw that that meal had 1190 calories in it. In my head I was thinking that what he is about to eat right now is almost enough calories for the whole day. When I finally got my food I sat down and unwrapped the wrapper and the first thing I realize is that the wrapper is extremely greasy. Even though what I was about to consume was very greasy and salty and filled with calories it taste really good. That right there is the catch why people come to Mcdonalds, the food is cheap and taste good. That right there is why Mcdonalds is a multi billion dollar company.
When I went to the farmers market I notice that there were vegetables everywhere and the first connection I made was how come Mcdonalds menu had no vegetables at all on the menu. As i walked to each stand I see fruits and vegetables I have never seen before and what I was really wondering is how they taste and it is possible that those vegetables and healthy foods can be cooked and taste just as good or better then Mcdonalds food. When it comes to organic and healthy foods it comes down to price and those things are expensive so I could see why people would go to mcdonalds instead of the food market.

Hw 1- Initial Thoughts about Food

I feel that there is a lot to say about food, it pertains to so many different aspects of the world. Food is the most important when it comes to tradition, culture, and religion. Another thing i realize with food is that it is deciding factor in emotions and how we feel on a day to day bases. Food can make you feel mad, sad, and happy. It plays such a big role in peoples lives because with out it you could not survive, but it also has a special bond with people that can't be explained.
I feel like my priorities for food have changed through out my high school years the most. When I was in middle school I feel like I ate more healthy. The main reason why is because I would go to school with my mother and she use to watch what I ate. Once I hit high school I picked up a bad eating habit of not eating breakfast and it got so bad i didn't eat breakfast for two months. The way i made up for that is by eating a big lunch and diner. What I have realize is that i eat too much junk food and I need to cut back on the soda and snacks. Even though i eat a lot of junk my mom makes sure i eat healthy. So i do feel that priorities now have got better and I know know how to manage what I eat.
My typical meal is made of chicken, beef, bread or rice. One thing I wish i would add to my typical meal or what i eat everyday is milk and vitamins. Even though I enjoy eating salads I usually don't feel like eating them for lunch because they don't fill me up. I notice that now I eat what ever I want and it is never really healthy. My favorite thing to eat is whatever my mother makes, I don't have a favorite meal. Even though I am young  I feel like I need to watch what i eat because i don't want eating unhealthy to become a habit.
